Civil Rights & The Apartheid

The post Civil Rights Movement and the South Africa Apartheid were both similiar and dissimiliar in some ways.  During the beginning in the early 1950s, both South Africa were fighting for one thing, equality.  They were going against the government and government officials in an attempt to fix its corrupted government.  The two were dissimilar because Americans focused on more peaceful boycotts and sit-ins.  There was the Montgomery bus boycott and the freedom riders, just to name a few, who wanted to be heard in less volatile ways.  Violence wasn’t the only answer, and America expected them to react violently when being intimidated, but their reaction was to be peaceful and show the world how unjust America really was.  In South Africa, though they too fought for justice and inequality, they had more blood shed than America, such as the Sharpeville massacre where South African police fired at African American protestors killing sixty-nine people. This event was led up bythe pass laws which were identification passes needed to be worn by the people at all times.  The pass laws was another differientiating factor from America. Though blacks and whites were separated, they were not forced to were identification badges at all times.  America and South Africa both fought for a certain cause but the results of things they did were handled in a different manner.

American Imperialism

Imperialism has been a world epic for centuries. It is defined as the policy of extending a nation’s authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political dominance over other nations.  America has been and still is an imperialistic nation.  In the history of the US they have never minded their own business, and attended only to US affairs.  As stated in the selection “America’s Big Stick,” the US believed in”Speak softly and carry a big stick;you will go far.” This further proves the point that the United Stated believed in having dominance over other nations, and proving its authorative figure.  The Monroe Doctrine of 1823 has been abandoned.  The United States does not play by the rules of staying out the affairs of others.  The war in Iraq and the disaster in Haiti are perfect examples.  The US is attempting to be the greatest power and place US officials in high places in Iraq, and after the Haiti disaster they went there as if they were helping the cause but really had alternative motives to gain territory there.  In conclusion, America will forever be an imperialist nation.  Forever will they have influence and political dominance in other nations.

The “Superior” African Race

Upon reading Thomas Jefferson’s remarks on the “inferior” African race, I was greatly disturbed! I can not even grasp that whole concept of my race being inferior to another! Jefferson basically said in a nutshell that we were nothing and could possibly never amount to the whites. We stands second to none! We have done more for this country than any other nationality will ever do for America. We practically made America, and have produced some of the most educated and influential people in history! We have produced the Martin Luther Kings, the Thurgood Marshalls, the Booker T. Washingtons, the Obamas and need I say more? America would be nothing without the many great contributions we have created in this world. They refuse to give us credit where credit is due, but even in the darkest times we will forever shine! Do you agree or disagree? Why?

Colonization Blog

Capitalism played an innovative role in both the past and present.  Capitalism is defined as when a person uses their resources to make a profit without the person actually being there at the time of the profit.  The Atlantic Slave Trade was a prime example of capitalism.  The Europeans would trade their funds in to buy ships and trading supplies. The Europeans would then go to Africa and export African slaves. Europeans obtained goods such as sugar and bananas from the Americas.  Natural resources were also obtained such as coal, natural gas, and petroleum. The significance between the growth of capitalism and the escalation of the trans-Atlantic slave trade is that as more profit was being made more money was being produced. As a result, more slaves were able to be bought.  Corporations such as Wal-Mart, Nike, and Halliburton are all examples of capitalist colonizers. These huge corporations buy out smaller corporations and make huge profits off them. In conclusion, colonization of the future still exists.  Second Life allows the user to create their own personal space and explore many different avenues of life.

Civilization Blog

The civilization game was rather entertaining and informative.  Once I got into the game, I was able to make wise decisions and help my people build civilizations that would stand the test of time.  While playing, I made good decisions as well as bad decisions.  Some good decisions I made were building more cities to prevent overcrowding.  I also was able to find many different resources such as gold, silver, and farming.  Like in history, one move affects many different aspects of your civilizations.  I built libraries in my cities, and as a result it was the beginning of educating oneself and doing research.  Books were a new commodity given to the people.  Likewise, I also made bad decisions while playing the game.  I allowed intruders to take up residence on my territory, and as recalled in history if one is not well-guarded, intruders will come in and take over your civilization.

Reflective Essay

This semester in History class was rather interesting for me.  I am really not a good history student, and I always felt like there was so much information to retain in such a short period of time.  My professor, Professor Underwood, proved me wrong this time.  While in her class this semester, I was able to get a more in depth class discussion on what we were learning about.  Although history is rather boring, Professor Underwood helped me to get a better understanding of it.  I appreciate history more, and I have learned things that I never thought I would learn.  While studying the different time periods and their great contributions to the world of today, gave me a better appreciation for my forefathers and mothers.  I was able to learn more about personal artifacts and obtain greater knowledge on different cultures and ways of living.

It amazed me how much technology and resources we have picked up and still use in today’s world from thousands and thousands of years ago.  I never felt history was an important subject and did not see the point in us learning about it, but my professor has given me a different outlook and perspective on things.  Although I dreaded those long slides full of notes, they really did instill important information into my memory bank.  I was able to go deep into different cultures and countries, and read on their ways of living, art and architecture, faiths, origin myths, philosophies, government, and popular culture.  Professor Underwood had us doing many different things while studying these cultures and countries, and I think that is what gave me a better visual on what I was learning about.  By elaborating on a certain thing, you are able to get more insight on what it is the professor is talking about.  The personal artifact essay was our first writing assignment of the year, and with this essay we had to pick our own personal artifact and describe how historians of the future would identify its significance to society later in life.  Upon completion of this assignment, I was able to understand the type of questions historians may answer to get a better understanding of what it is they are studying.  This was by far the easiest assignment we were given, because it was more personal to me and my writing flow was much better.  We also were assigned to write a cultural analysis paper.  While doing my cultural analysis paper, I was able to focus on a certain aspect of a culture of my choice and elaborate on it.  I chose homosexuality in Ancient Greece, and I was amazed at the research I stumbled upon.  This paper was rather difficult because I was not sure if I was researching the culture correctly, and it was rather hard to get my ideas flowing like I wanted them to.  This paper was a prime example of one of the main things Professor Underwood had us do as a way of getting a better understanding on what we were being taught.  Professor Underwood did a great job of making sure we were not only learning about these different people and ways of living, but also were getting something out of it.  She made the class more interesting and bearable.  I really thought I would die of boredom, but she actually kept my attention the whole semester.  I also learned about the creation of the first humans to ever walk earth, Homo Erectus and Homo Sapiens Sapiens, Mesopotamia, the birthplace of civilization, the first type of writing, cuneiform, a form of wedge-shaped lettering, The Tigris and Euphrates River, the two rivers that were the main source of food in Mesopotamia, and also the beginning of early Christianity.

Overall, I think my experience as a first year freshman in History 201 was much better than I anticipated. Going into the class, I did not know what to expect or what challenges I would be faced with, but I was able to take everything in stride and put forth my best effort. It has taught me self-discipline and time management.  Without those two things, there is no way one can pass the class because it is too much information to retain simply by studying only during class meetings.  One must take time each day to go over the material learned in the course of that day.  As a result, I have learned valuable information that I can now transfer over into the second semester of this course.

My Religion

The religion my group and I developed was Michael Jacksonism.  It is a monotheistic religion and Joe Jackson and Michael’s three kids Blanket, Paris, and Price, are worshipped as gods and goddesses.  Our religion came from Gary, Indiana through the Jackson’s parents, Joe and Katherine.  The origin myth is that you should rule with an iron fist.  This means you should beat your kids and raise them to be successful pop stars so you can live off their good fortune.  Our sacred text is the ABC 123 Commandments: A1) All families should have five or more children. B2) The man must rule with an iron glove and your children and wife must respect and fear you. C3) Be fruitful and have plenty of money.  Our sacred book is Michael Jackson’s Greatest Hits.  The followers of our religion must have a perm, multiple nose jobs, and bleached at least twice.  Salvation simply comes from fame and good fortune.  The message of our religion is spread through famous artists such as Lil Kim and other books the Jackson family has published.
